The Holy Night – A Timeless Christmas Carol

“O Holy Night” is a Christmas carol that originated in France. The music was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847, who was a French composer and music critic. The melody was originally written for a poem called “Minuit, chrétiens” (Midnight, Christians) by Placide Cappeau, a wine merchant and poet.

Placide Cappeau was asked by his parish priest to write a poem for Christmas Eve mass. He wrote the poem in 1847, and it was later set to music by Adolphe Adam. The lyrics of “O Holy Night” tell the story of the birth of Jesus Christ and the significance of his coming. The song became popular in France and was eventually translated into English by John Sullivan Dwight.

 

The song’s popularity grew rapidly, and it has since become one of the most listened to Christmas songs in the world. “O Holy Night” has been re-recorded by several artists, including Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban and many others.
