Claude Monet – Women in the Garden (Femmes au jardin)

This is the famous painting known as Women in the Garden is a work by the great French Impressionist painter Claude Monet.

The painting presents four very well-dressed young women in elegant clothes for the time. This beautiful and interesting work of art was not as successful as Monet had hoped, being turned down by the Paris art salon in 1867. The women here were most likely inspired by Camille Doncieux, Monet’s future wife.

We can see the strong contrasts of light and shadow, and the bright colors that were one of the reasons why this Monet painting was turned down. The intense light of the midday sun causes the woman to protect herself with an umbrella, leaving her face in shadow. In turn the woman’s white dress in the foreground depicts floral motifs with beautiful wavy shapes.

The bouquet of flowers that the man in the background is holding in his hands consists of several types of flowers where the artist tried to use colors such as red, yellow, pink and other shades of color.
